The island of Sainte Marie off the east coast of Madagascar, 35 km from Soanierana-Ivongo, is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Madagascar. This piece of land is a real paradise. A must for tourism in Madagascar with its beaches, forests and historical sites.

Sainte Marie is a historical island full of legends. It is on two important trading routes from the 17th century: the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is also known by the Malagasy name Nosy Boraha Boraha and owes its name to the arrival of a Jewish trader. At the beginning of the 16th century, the Portuguese who discovered it baptized the island of Santa Maria, hence the current name. During the 17th century the island was used as a refuge by many pirates such as John Avery, Thomas Tew, William Kidd, etc.

The island is surrounded by a few other islands where excursions can be made: Île aux Nattes, Îlot Madame and Île aux Forbans. Ile aux Nattes is a little paradise for those looking for peace and quiet. You remember a small piece of deserted land worthy of the legend of Robinson Crusoe. A walk on the beautiful sandy beaches is very pleasant. The island rises in the middle of a magnificent turquoise and translucent sea. History lovers should definitely visit the Îlot Madame, which is still the former residence of the governors and administrators from 1871.
